Beautiful hand-blown glass whale oil or fluid float lamp with a brass heat ring around the top rim.
This rare old lamp burned rendered whale blubber by filling the glass font / reservoir and placing a lit, floating cotton wick on top of the oil. This type of oil was sought after in its day because it burned cleanly, brightly, and with minimal smoke as compared to animal-fat candles. It's an amazing relic of the past.
This particular lamp has a cased ruby glass ball-form font with a colorless standard. It features an elegant baluster-form stem and a circular-form foot. Top rim has a brass heat ring with pretty patina.
